Tamahagane San Knives. A tri-ply construction consists of an inner core of VG5 steel, with a Rockwell hardness of 58-59 degrees for superior sharpness and strength, sandwiched between two softer layers of stainless steel for flexibility. The natural wood of the handle contrasts beautifully with the shining steel of every Tamahagane San Knife.

Tamahagane steel was only used for the very highest quality Japanese Samurai Swords. The Tamahagane San Kyoto 63-ply blade is made by repeatedly rolling and folding the steel, extracting impurities and making the blade harder and more durable. What begins life as a 20mm thick steel sandwich ends up as a 2mm thick knife blade.
